In observance of the 16 Days of Activism, Persatuan Sahabat Wanita Selangor (PSWS) organized a workshop focused on women workers’ rights. Understanding these rights is essential, as it empowers women to identify and address economic violence a form of harm that is frequently overlooked.

Economic violence for many women workers can manifest in various ways, including unpaid or underpaid wages, unfair deductions, delayed salaries, forced unpaid overtime, or intimidation when asserting their rights.

 

The workshop employed interactive discussions to create a supportive and engaging environment, enabling participants to learn, share experiences, and strengthen their confidence in advocating for their rights.

Persatuan Sahabat Wanita Selangor, in collaboration with LLRC, organised an Expert Group Meeting: “Strengthening Malaysian Trade Unions as Part of Strengthening Democracy in Malaysia ”Capitalising on Law Reforms and the NAPBHR 2025–2030 in conjunction with the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

Malaysia’s new NAPBHR 2025–2030 marks a key milestone for labor rights, especially freedom of association and collective bargaining. The meeting brought together trade union leaders and CSOs to discuss ways to strengthen the role of unions in promoting fundamental rights within today’s political, economic, and socio-cultural landscape  including issues affecting migrant workers.

25 November is the International  Day for Elimination of violence against women. PSWS would like the opportunity to highlight economic violence which women particularly those who engage in precarious/casual work. They face severe economic violence, a form of non-physical gender-based violence (GBV), which remains a significant obstacle to women’s empowerment. 

While economic freedom enables women to control their financial resources and make decisions that shape their economic future, economic violence systematically undermines these freedoms, trapping women in cycles of poverty, dependency, and disempowerment.
